    SPD & Eating

Sensory Processing Disorder is my biggest hurdle in getting him to eat. He goes through fazes. For awhile it was only beef hot dogs, eggs, and fruit. I give him supplements for the vegetables and vitamins he's missing. This baffles me as we know eggs do not have the best texture. Yet other foods he will touch and toss. It's been a real struggle. A few months ago he was at a picnic and decided he liked Hot Links...and I mean really hot Louisiana style Links... go figure! So now he doesn't like hot dogs anymore. He will still eat eggs though. Fruit is always his number one love.

If we go out he will eat other foods. But only if he gets it from someone else's plate. But these foods are still in the meat and fruit category.

SPD affects him mainly when he is offered with too many choices. His plate needs to be prepared simple and to the point. First a small plate of cut up meat. Next course is the small plate of cut up fruit. Then a few drops of vitamins in his juice cup. I have to make sure he doesn't see me though, lol! If I put anymore on his plate he has Sensory Overload and will not eat anything.

What are some of the hurdles you have to overcome during mealtimes?

It sounds like you have him figured out now at least. I'm sure it was an even greater challenge before you did!

~mine liked nothing sticky gooey or messy...texture was huge...so same as what you are doing find what works and sneak in the vitamins as best as possible...smoothies worked great as i put it in a cup with a straw and lid so he could not see and i would add any and everything i could...we never pushed or forced food...offered it on his plate...seperated so no one thing touched another and as the years have passed he is now more willing to eat and try new foods...

i was told spd is like a rollercoaster...you go through easy days and months and all is well and then in an instant back to where you first started...i do believe with age and through therapy it does get better easier and life goes on! no fear my dear...you are doing a wonderful job!! warm wishes and brightest blessings~

Sounds like fun at meal time. Too funny about the hot links though! I completely agree with blueviolet...it may be a challenge now, but I can only imagine the challenge it was before you had a few things figured out.

It's amazing how you adapt to what goes on with your children. I don't have any kids right now. I applaud you for being so great at taking care of and recognizing your son's needs.

I think I suffered some of SPD myself. Still to this day (for as long as I can remember) there are many foods the smell or texture will make me gag.

A little girl in my brother's class has what Tafari has. They did many things to help her get out of it... but know that they had to adjust to her and not the other way around. It seems like that is what you have done so kuddos to you!! (:

    <3 you!

We deal with SPD too. We tubefed my youngest for over a year, so now the fact that she eats anything makes me happy. But she's picky. And fickle and doesn't drink enough. I still haven't figured her out. And she's messy, messy, messy.
I love that you're blog's about everything. That's my approach to blogging too.

I must confess that I have actually given up trying to orally feed Ashlea. I should try again because now her understanding of the world is so much better she might be willing to try it. Maybe.

this a tough issue. at times you go forward and next backwards. small portions of an item on a plate is a good idea.

Mostly we struggle with vegetables at our house, which with three growing boys causes some grief at the dinner table.

Texture is still a pretty big factor in our house, it causes many a meltdown (mostly by Mama).

You must be a very patient Mom. You sound amazingly ready for any challenge.
