    Tafari...Look Me in the Eye

I've made another Medical Check up for my son. Lately he is really stimming  out the corner of his eyes. It seems to bother all the Medical people more than me. Maybe because it doesn't seem to hurt him? Maybe because I am ignorant as to why he shouldn't do this? The therapist all pull his face or nudge him to look there way. That bugs me more than him not looking at me. I guess I will go talk to the doctor so I can be more educated. I've read books on it and been to Seminars but I am still a little clueless.

I wonder what is up with that...when you find out, please share! He may not supposed to be doing it, but it sure makes for some cute pics! He is sooo adorable!

I thought that was a trait of Autism. Not wanting direct eye contact that is. Maybe I am wrong. I hope everything is ok.

It is a part of Autism but I don't understand all the fuss.

Speaking of @gdla, do you follow Holly Robinson Peete on Twitter? She and Jillian are really good friends and Jill often RT's her. Anyway, she has a child w autism. And you should follow Jenny McCarthy too.

Keep meaning to find you on Twitter but keep missing you!

Children with autism don't have direct eye contact. It wouldn't hurt to talk with doctor.

Let us know what you find out. I agree that the corner of the eye looks make for some great photos if nothing else. He's such a handsome guy!

My son used to look at things sideways but rarely does it anymore. I have read that it can sometimes be related to a vitamin A deficiency and can be treated with cod liver oil. Here is one article about it: http://www.megson.com/readings/BiologicalBasis.pdf

You can also go to a vision therapist who works with autism to have an evaluation done to see if there are other vision issues that wouldn't be caught by a standard exam.

    Good luck!

I think it's kind of an interesting quirk. As long as it doesn't hurt him, like cause him problems walking into things because he's trying to look at them indirectly, I don't see why it's hurtful. But I'm not a doctor, so who knows. Good luck. :)

Let us know what is going on with that. There is so much to learn, isn't there?

Jane, my son is has greatly improved his direct eye contact but still looks completely out of the the side of his eye when he points to something that he wants to show me.

I think that you, as his primary caregiver will be able to better tell if it is interfering with his overall growth.

I am strongly opposed to forcing my child to do something that causes him anxiety. If my child feels more comfortable and "safe" by communicating with me by not looking directly at me, then I allow that. The same if he finds that a noise is too loud (even though to you and me it is a perfectly natural sound)

When he first started PREk the teacher told me that they do not allow kids to plug their ears when their is a loud noise. I put an immediate stop to that for my son. Plugging his ears is his way of regulating the stimulus that he can't handle.

Your son is still so young. If this is his way to regulate, then I think there are other things that would be top on list of priorities.

Just my 2 cents. Hugs momma :)

Make sure and let us know what's up with that. I'm not up on things about autism so I'm learning through you.
