I am going to cheat a lil' this Sunday... we are still talking about New Years Eve...that was a Thursday, oops! I am still exhausted from having 11 Twelve-Fourteen year old Boys Sleep-Over New Years Eve! Here are the Pics from our night! We BBQ'd, Danced, and went to bed at 6:30am!! Well, to be honest I blinked at 11:55am and opened my eyes at 12:02 am.. I didn't even realize I fell asleep. So when I bolted up I told the kids the clocks were wrong and we ran out and yelled Happy New Years! I let them dance and blare the music in our Apartment Courtyard until the New Years. My neighbors let their kids run wild daily and I usually keep my kids out of that mix, so I felt no sympathy for them. Well here's some things I learned through the New Years..
MY KIDS A JERK!
I had to really investigate this trend. When my son asked me to buy tight purple pants, a.k.a Skinny Jeans, I was confused! Didn't I just buy a whole wardrobe of Baggy Jeans last year? I thought it was Karma because I've complained over and over about how ridiculous Big Baggy Jeans are!
So I set into my investigation to find out exactly what my son was doing with his friends in the streets of Long Beach, California. I learned what Jerking is. It's basically like the 80's Break Dancing Trend. Kids battle with Dancing instead of fighting and Gangs. They have a crew name and all wear Skinny Jeans, Vans Tennis Shoes, and sometimes a way too Colorful Backpack. Some times they throw up their signs when they dance. The signs they throw are their crew. It's harmless... and not Gang Affiliated.
These kids battle each other buy dancing against different crews. They video tape it and love to post it on You Tube. All you need to know is your kids Crew name and you can watch what they are doing.
The only thing of Concern is the music. The lyrics have made me gasp. I sound like my parents did complaining about Lyrics! My biggest thing is you can sensor kids only so much but teaching them and talking about Lyrics is the key. For example I explained to my son what was wrong with the Lyrics in "Empire State of Mind" where Jay-Z said "jesus can't save you" (Thanks Trenesha for bringing that to my attention).
I let the boys Jerk at my house... I evesdrop on their conversation, investigate my sons MySpace, You Tube, and scroll through his Texts all without his knowledge of course.
My opinion: Jerking is like Breakdancing and Dancing is harmless!

Thats the longest list of texting lingo I have ever seen in my life..lol WOW You can have a complete conversations with that..Im so behind the times..lol
The food looked awesome and loved the pics of the kids! Happy New Year and have a wonderful week!
Holy cow. I love that your kid is a jerk! What a great way to have fun and make new friends : ) I learned somethings on that list. That is a lot of information! Wow! : ) Happy New Year!
After reading all of this I feel much more prepared for the next few years as my oldest begins to hit the annoying teen years. I was thinking at fist you were calling your son a jerk and I will admit that part of me was disappointed that you were not. Thanks for the lessons in so many areas today.
I learned a lot from that. Up until now my only texting abbreviation has been LOL. And it's good that you know what the kids are up to and what they are doing!
LOL @ Becca... i definitely was insinuating he was a jerk! I am glad everyone is getting something out of that loooooong text list.. Hope you all have a Brilliant New Year!
I think the dancing is cool and a much better way to battle it out than many of the alternatives out there. As far as the texting lingo goes; it's a whole other language.
Ok I just TODAY learned about jerking from my 8yr old. Learned a lot from your post! :-)
This was a great great great post!
I love that you have all the kids over at your house. Maybe you can give me some advice on how to handle when ur kids friends come over with behaviour you're not so excited about... I really want to have them hang out here, but I can't say I'm thrilled with one of their friends' behaviour...
@Mami I feel like I am learning a Second Language... It's crazy!
@When did i become my mom... did your 8yr old show you some moves? I love when the little ones jerk! As for the friend issue.. That has been a long battle with me (my kids are 24, 18, 12, & 2 1/2). What I've learned from my experience is not to say you don't like the kid! They will turn into their best friend! What I found that works is I point out the behaviors of the kid... I just had to do this last night.. my son had borrowed something from another kid and I pointed out to my son that every time they exchange Ipods and "the kid" gets in trouble he blames you to his mom. As a matter of fact everytime he is in trouble he blames all of his friends, so if you want to deal with that go ahead. Islaam (my son) told me "Thats so True, I hate when he does that.. I'm not touching anything of his".
"Now what I really wanted to say, is don't play with him! He's a Brat and his mom is constantly calling me and the other moms blaming our kids.. he's a liar and annoying! Get a new friend and he's not allowed in our house because he's a sh** starter!!"
